About These Workshops
If you’re interested in earth building but haven’t had the opportunity to get real-life experience, this is your chance. Get your hands in the mud and learn practical skills that you can apply towards your own earthen creations, on a gorgeous community land project at Te Tawa Farm in the Karangahake Gorge, about an hour and a half from Auckland, NZ.
These workshops will be taught by Autumn Flower Creek of MudWorks, a builder and educator from the West Coast of the USA.
During the first weekend, we will finish the walls of an earthen sauna with beautiful clay top coat plasters and sculpted earthen designs. During the second weekend, we will be creating an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven and wood-fired grill. These workshops can be taken independently, but join us for both to get the full experience and immerse yourself in these building practices.
A window into what’s coming:
- Discussion & lecture on earthen building
- Guidance on identifying clay soil materials on-site
- Demonstrations on plaster mixing and application
- A chance to use trowels and other traditional tools
- Time to mix and apply onto a real structure with support from Flower
- Creative expression through sculpture
Spots are limited to just EIGHT students for the first weekend, and SIX for the second! Reservations are required.
If you feel called to participate but are unable to pay the $230 scholarship rate, please get in touch to discuss potential further scholarship or work trade.
